Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-10-06
Shimr has no accounts and does not sell or share your data for advertising. This policy explains the little we process and why.
Approximate location
To show tonight’s aurora chance and to send alerts, the app uses your location only while it is open (“When In Use”), or a place you pick on the map. Your exact position stays on your phone. Our server receives only an approximate area — the location rounded to about 0.5° (roughly 50 km) — together with the place name you see in the app (for example “Edinburgh”), so the alert can name it.
If you turn on alerts, the server also stores, for each place: the rounded location, your alert settings (how often, quiet hours), your phone’s time zone and language, a push notification token from Apple, and an anonymous subscription ID used to check that alerts are part of your subscription. It also keeps a log of the alerts sent (time and chance) to limit them to one per night.
Weather and aurora data
To get cloud forecasts, our server asks Apple Weather for the rounded area — never for your exact position and without any identifier of you. Aurora and space weather data comes from the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center; no information about you is sent to NOAA.
“I saw the aurora”
If you tap “I saw the aurora”, the app sends the rounded area, the time, the chance shown and (if you came from an alert) which alert it was. We use this only to measure and improve forecast accuracy.
App analytics and crash reports
We use PostHog to count how the app is used (for example: onboarding completed, alerts turned on, a paywall shown) and Sentry to receive crash reports. These do not contain your location or place names, are not linked to your identity and are not used for tracking or advertising. Session recording is off.
Purchases
Subscriptions are handled by Apple and RevenueCat. We do not see your payment details. RevenueCat assigns an anonymous ID to keep track of your subscription status.
App Attest
To protect our server from abuse, the app may use Apple’s App Attest to prove that requests come from the genuine app on a real device. This does not identify you.
Deleting your data
In the app, go to Settings → Delete my data: your places and settings are removed from your phone and from our server immediately. Deleting the app removes everything stored on the phone; the server deletes your places as soon as Apple reports that notifications can no longer be delivered to it. You can also write to berlinramroop860@gmail.com.
Children
The app is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect their personal data.
